In both, Faulkner and Hannig, the blade tip shows clearly towards the body of the snake. It is clearly an error from the "Project Rosette" team and not the Red Crown...

Here I believe Lutz is right. Apep/Apophis is distinguished from other serpents by having characteristically 4 or more sidewinding loops or humps, denoting the serpent's great size, while a regular snake or cobra is usually shown with no more than 3. Most of the Apep glyphs as torn apart by knives can be found in the extended library from I86a through I87, with knives pointing in both directions, so that is not an indicator of the correctness of the glyph.

What Project Rosette has done is to confuse I103, which is a Red-crowned cobra, with 2 humps, with the larger Apep glyphs, detailed above.

I have checked these glyphs in Hannig, Vector Office (which is a superb hieroglyph processing program, BTW, as well as free), and in Win Glyph, the latter two of which are on my "travelling" computer, as I am in Egypt at the moment.
