I am studying the text book titled "Middle Egyptian" by James P. Allen. There seems to be some confusion regarding the rule on whether adjectives are placed after the noun or before. In chapter 6 he states that the adjective must always follow the noun. But in chapter 7 he states that the predicate, which contains the adjective, always comes before the subject, which can be a noun. There is clearly a conflict. Here are some examples:
per.k pen nefer This beautiful house of yours
jker sekher pen This plan is excellent
Can someone help me with this? |

The second example is a very common construction called a predicate adjective, which puts the adjective in front. Hoch Section 44 has a good explanation: "... the adjective, when serving as predicate, occurs only in the initial sentence position... it occurs almost always without introductory particle..." Prof. Allen tends to use his own set of grammatical descriptors compared to other grammars.
By the way, it is easier to express sentences using unicode. IE, "iqr sxr pn" |
